Mother and Daughter

Jessica from North Carolina requested the Chinese translation for “mother and daughter” as in “virtue and happiness are mother and daughter”…  Benjamin Franklin…  how ’bout that Ben??…  always comin’ up with those clever idioms.

… where in this context, the first character means “mother” and the second character means “daughter.”

I would like to get a tattoo of the chinese symbols for mother and daughter. I have seen the sybols side by side but am wondering if they could be placed vertically one on top of the other.

    Thank you

  2. j.t. Says:

Yes, you can place them vertically.  See here for more info on horizontal vs. vertical placement.

Also FYI, in English we call them “words.” Similarly, in Chinese we call them “characters” not “symbols.”

…  and if you’re getting a tattoo…  consider skipping a lunch out, and order my company’s Chinese character e-book, where you’ll get your characters done right in 15 different writing styles.  Remember, it costs several hundred dollars over numerous painful sessions to remove an incorrectly done tattoo.

My mother and I are interested in getting these characters as tattoos. But I was wondering, can they be separated? For example, I’d get the daughter character and she’d get the mother character. If so, which simple means mother and which means daughter.

    Thanks!

could you please email the mother daughter symbol

  5. j.t. Says:

Brooke, see here for mother and see here for daughter.

Also, like I mentioned to Annalise… if you’re getting a tattoo, consider skipping a lunch out, and order my company’s Chinese character e-book. You’ll get your characters done *right* in 15 different writing styles. Again, it costs several hundred dollars over numerous painful sessions to remove an incorrectly done tattoo.

Lynette, please note they are called characters, not symbols.
