Mother
I was wondering when someone was going to ask for this! Neil from the U.K. (!) requested the Chinese translation for “mother.” Methinks someone’s getting a serious jump on Mother’s Day?… lol.

… where essentially the first character means “mother” and the second character means “dear” (again, as in “my dear wife”… and erhm again, no I’m not married! haha.).
Want to see these characters embroidered on a women’s or unisex t-shirt? Or on a women’s or unisex tank top? Click the appropriate preceding link. Got a translation request of your own? Contact me!

Can the above translation for mother be written vertically? if so how would it be written?as the second symbol looks like it has two symbols in one. If it was written vertically down my arm for a tattoo would it still be 2 symbols or 3? Many thanks.

Yes, it can be written vertically… read the FAQ I posted about it here… and yes, it’s 2 characters, not three.
Also, if you’re getting a tattoo, you may want to consider skipping a lunch out and getting my company’s Chinese character e-book… which illustrates these characters *correctly* in 15 different writing styles as well as includes detailed information about your characters’ meanings. Remember, it costs several hundred dollars over numerous painful sessions to remove an incorrectly done tattoo.
Oh, and FYI, in English, they are called “words.” Similarly, in Chinese, they are called “characters,” not “symbols.”

Many thanks for confirming this for me. Would it be possible if you could give me the traditional chinese words for “peace” please. Thanks again for your help. Regards, Chris.

Is there any version of Mother or Mom that can be used with just one character? I would really appreciate any help I can get on this…..it seems there are so many variations of the words & I’m not sure which ones are correct. Then, some websites post just one symbol for Mother, while others have 2…..Help, please!

Erin, just as in English, there are many synonyms for “mother”… momma, mom, ma, mama…
If you used just the first character above, people would understand that it’s “mother”… tho technically, when translating “mother” directly, you would use both characters above.
For “mom,” you are fine to use just one of the characters at the link here… http://definingcharacters.com/blog/2006/04/23/mom/
