Simplified characters were created by the Chinese government (mainland) in an attempt to promote literacy.  Traditional characters are still used for important ceremonies, for cultural purposes (such as calligraphy), etc.
To me, simplified Chinese characters just seem empty, missing something, lacking uh character (sorry!) or [...]

Viki’s daughter from California named their cat “sandwich” (as in the food item)…  “I was so hungry, I wolfed down my sandwich”…  not the verb “to sandwich”…  “the ladies sandwiched me on the dance floor”… (booyah!)
