Viki’s daughter from California named their cat “sandwich” (as in the food item)…  “I was so hungry, I wolfed down my sandwich”…  not the verb “to sandwich”…  “the ladies sandwiched me on the dance floor”… (booyah!)

In this case, it is actually a “transliteration” rather than a “translation”…  which means that the Mandarin Chinese characters here are used for their close approximation in sound to the English word, rather than for their actual meanings.

Having said that, while the individual character meanings have no relation to the word “sandwich” itself, I’m gonna provide them here for completeness sake…  the first character means “three.”  Both the second and third characters have numerous and varied meanings depending on context, but the second character can mean “bright” or “light” and the last character can mean “to control” or “to administer.”
